Academic Success Proposal
I remember the day of New Year's 2022; I worked
a temporary night shift position in a warehouse. When the clock hit midnight,
my coworkers were full of joy, conversing with one another about their New Year
resolutions. As I continued to work, a coworker approached me to ask about my New
Year’s resolutions and when the new semester started. I stood there in silence.
The agonizing memories of unexpected life events from 2021 flooded my mind. Life
was “lifing” I was overwhelmed and failed the previous semester of college. Therefore,
I dreaded the unknown of 2022. At that moment, my coworker stated, "Focus
on your mental health. Everything will come together. Be fruitful."
My goal has been to grow through adversity while
maintaining an optimistic mindset to succeed. Even now, I am struggling with
maintaining my mental health while striving to become academically successful. I
often become over-consumed with solving the problems of my family and friends
while neglecting my daily tasks. Afterward, I am anxious, mentally exhausted,
and cannot concentrate due to the negligence of my actions. I never have an
adequate amount of time to complete my coursework. To tackle the struggles of
maintaining my mental health, I am taking the initiative to implement effective
strategies such as stress management, time management, and mindfulness
practices.
Approximately three-quarters of female
students (72%) report experiencing a lot of the prior day compared with 56% of
male students. Likewise, 56% of female students report experiencing worry the
prior day, compared with 40% of their male peers. Feelings of sadness are also
much higher among female college students, and female students are less likely
than male students to report experiencing enjoyment (Hrynowwski and Marken). To
reduce stress while striving to become academically successful, I have decided
to implement a few of the “9 Tips for Managing Stress in College” written by
CollegeData, which are Exercise often, Limit caffeine intake, Adequate amount
of sleep, Balance meals, Expressing your emotions, and Schedule me time.
As a full-time college student and working full-time,
time management is one of my struggles with maintaining my mental health and
academic success. The five principles of time management, which are planning, prioritizing
tasks, productivity tools, procrastination-induced stress, and personal time,
are helpful. Implement these principles into work, school, and self-care time
smoothly.
I believe implementing Mindfulness Practices
would positively impact tackling the struggle of maintaining my mental health. Two
mindfulness practices I could potentially implement would include the STOP
practice and Physical Exercise. The STOP practices include techniques such as stopping
to take a moment to yourself, Taking a deep breath, Observing how you feel
mentally, and Proceeding intentionally. The Physical practices include going
for a walk or simply taking breaks to get up and move.
In conclusion, by implementing these various
strategies, I will have the ability and knowledge to tackle my struggle with
maintaining my mental health to reach my goal of being Academically successful.
