Assignment #2: Annotated Bibliography

 This assignment I had to choose a short story my instructor provided. After choosing my short story which was "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, I had to list multiple credible sources. Then write a short synopsis on each source pertaining to the short story. My intended audience was my peers and instructor.

In this article, the writer is breaking down the predetermined roles for genders in society specifically for "girls" growing into young women. The author uses this short story to express in a unique manner the role of family, society, and gender determine our identity and place in the world. I could use this source in a project concerning cultural norms, gender roles, and societal expectations of gender-based roles.

In this article the author discusses the intersection of womanhood, racism and family. Ludimila Moreira describes how Kincaid’s writing probes the multiple societal based restrictions on identity, colonialism and self-worth. This source is credible because it was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal. I would use this source on the effects on colonialism and how poverty in some facets intersect.

                In this article the author talks about the real and non-fiction dynamics of the socialization of woman hood in society. The writer expresses ideas and examples within the text they could support the understanding of a different perspective concerning a mother’s role in a daughter’s life mentally, physically, psychologically and the critical responsibility it is to build a foundation of stability to support the struggles of being a black woman in a society that values you less than others.  This source is credible because it was published in an academic peer-reviewed journal. I would use this source on an assignment concerning mental health, the socialization of a woman, motherhood, and health studies.

Jamaica Kincaid uses this story to illustrate the infinite ways to experience your blackness whether that be conforming to old traditions or understanding a need to build new ones to advance in life while dealing with potential setbacks.  This source is credible because it was published in a peer-reviewed academic journal.  I would use this source in a history-based essay to further expound on how African Americans advanced in society and helped build the culture.

I would use this source when discussing a theme concerning how often we share things in common rather than not.

I would cite this source to show how important it is to have the right guidance in forming who you’re going to be in the world.
